Kaizen

The Japanese philosophy of Kaizen has come to represent the principles of continuous improvement.
The word itself means "change for the better."
This week, I share six simple ideas that represent components of Kaizen that we can all benefit from.
For a discussion about the basic concept of continuous improvement, please see this week's Leadership Adventure blog post titled "The Language of Progress (3 of 3)." You can check that out by clicking the button below.

The Big Reveal
Thursday Jun 01, 2023
Thursday Jun 01, 2023
In the 1960s sitcom "Bewitched," Samantha's husband Darren played an advertising executive. In several episodes, he would bring clients to their Manhattan avenue office for "the big reveal" of an ad campaign that he had been working on.
Whenever you have a "big reveal," the pressure is on. Either your client will love it - or they won't.
Today, it makes much more sense to bring clients into your thinking, testing and development processes early. Today's technology easily facilitates this, and usually you end up with a much better result.
In this week's video, I share four simple ideas for making your testing and development processes go as smoothly as possible.
The video complements this week's written blog, "The Language of Progress (2 of 3)" where we discussed different types of testing and the definitions of each.

Craftsmanship

Thursday May 25, 2023
Have you ever considered your leadership in terms of craftsmanship?
Effective leadership is both an art and a science.
If we aren't intentional about the art of leadership - the craftsmanship aspect - we risk losing a vital aspect of our influence.
Today, we'll explore this topic using one of the world's foremost Swiss watch manufacturers as an example.
The company is Jaeger-LeCoultre. They are known as "The Watchmaker of Watchmakers."

Maximum Impact
Thursday May 18, 2023
Thursday May 18, 2023
There is nothing quite like rolling a strike in bowling.
Once you release the ball, there is a sense of growing excitement and anticipation when you realize that the ball seems to be on the right track.
Then - BAM - there is a small thunderclap as the ball hits the pins and they fly all over in response. Nothing left standing. The impact is immediate.
But, if the ball is off by even a small margin, what looks like a strike can actually end up being a 7/10 split, where you have two pins left on the back row. One on the far left, and one on the far right.
For leaders, the same is true about our impact. If we vary even slightly from the right trajectory, our impact can be significantly reduced and even produce unintended consequences.
This week, as we make the switch from "Two Minute Tips" to "Raise the Bar," I'll summarize the ideas that we've discussed over the last six weeks or so, and provide you with a step by step process for moving toward maximum impact over time, and staying on course.

Strategic Lanes Part Deux
Thursday May 04, 2023
Thursday May 04, 2023
This week we wrap up our strategic lanes conversation.
First, I'll show you how to integrate the results of your time log. Second, I'll discuss the concept of "lane changes." By planning your work intelligently, you'll be able to switch gears (or change lanes) and stay in one of your other lanes even if you encounter a speed bump or stopping point in the one you're working on.
As a reminder, you can also use this idea for your family, church or any other organization you work with.
Next week I'll integrate the concepts we've discussed over the few weeks and I'll give you a few ideas on how to bring them all together and make them a regular part of your leadership life.

Strategic Lanes
Thursday Apr 27, 2023
Thursday Apr 27, 2023
This week we are doing a "chalk talk" on the subject of strategic lanes. Strategic lanes is a very simple but very helpful tool that will help you improve your focus on the most important parts of your job, which will improve your impact over time.
I ran a little long this week, but this is an important topic so I wanted to make sure and explain it thoroughly.
As a side note, you can also use this idea for your family, church or any other organization you work with. Today, however, I focus on the basics as they apply to your primary vocational role.
Next week we'll summarize the concepts of the last few weeks and bring them all together.
